Serial Number Identification
Serial number is punched on the right side of the cylinder block (looked from the flywheel). Note! In 11-series engines serial number can be on the left side of the cylinder block.
The type of engines manufactured before 1986, can be indentified from the serial number according the following table:
| Type | First Serial Number | Last Serial Number | Year of Manufacture |
| 310 B | 10 000 | 46 000 | 1962...84 |
| 311 C | 1000 | 11 000 | 1977...84 |
| 311 CS | 20 000 | 23 000 | 1979...84 |
| 311 DS | 50 000 | 51 500 | 1983...90 |
| 411 AB | 10 000 | 12 915 | 1972...74 |
| 411 A, AS | 1000 | 8000 | 1964...72 |
| 411 B, BS | 1000 | 27 200 | 1972...79 |
| 411 C, CS | 30 000 | 40 800 | 1979...84 |
| 411 D, DS | 45 000 | 46 500 | 1983...90 |

| 611 CS, DS | 1000 | 5000 | 1975...91 |
| 309 DS | 53 900 | 60 000 | 1984...90 |
From 1986 to 1991 engines were numbered by consecutive numbering from 60 000 to 100 000. These serial numbers don't reveal engine type directly.
Engines manufactured during or after 1991 include a letter on serial number. The manufacturing year can be identified by the letter according to the following table. However, serial number doesn't reveal the engine type directly.
