It has been said that Brazil attracted Finns’ attention soon after the Second World War because it sent a free shipment of coffee to Finland. This was the start of regular coffee imports and in 1959 the trade partnership was broadened with the first shipment of 250 Valmet tractors to Brazil.
Valmet do Brazil was founded in 1960 and local tractor manufacturing started in 1962. At that time, the engine had to be a local make and Valmet chose MWM as its partner. The first delivery of 50 Complete Build Up (CBU) 420 DS engines was made for Valmet 985S models in 1993. At the same time, work was started on familiarizing VdB's personnel with engine assembly, maintenance and service. The decision to use AGCO SISU POWER (former SisuDiesel) engines proved to be a wise one and a transition to Semi Knock Down (SKD) engines was made the following year. They were supplemented with local parts, including electrical and fuel system parts and oil sumps. They were the first AGCO SISU POWER engines made outside Finland.
Stage three was launched in 2000 when the first entire diesel engines were assembled at the Brazil plant. The first three-cylinder blocks were made in Brazil in 2003 and the manufacturing of four-cylinder blocks was started in 2006.
By the end of 2008, over 60.000 Valtras with original engines and a power range from 65 to 180 HP had been made. The next challenges include introducing AGCO SISU POWER engines to other Brazilian farm machinery.
